Ambiguity about the role of psychiatric hospitals for this group of patients is growing. To help the discussion some demographic and diagnostic features of this group are given, including mortality- and discharge-rates of a residentcohort 1970 over a period of 7 years. Finally the number of severely mentally retarded resident patients is estimated up to 1985, anticipating no change in the admission and discharge policy of mental hospitals for this group of patients.
