Post-stroke depression: a review and two cases

C.M. Cornelis

Recent research shows that the prevalence of post-stroke depression is 30-50%. According to this research, localisation and magnitude of the lesion play a more prominent role than the physical impairment caused by the stroke. A distinction can be made between major and minor depression, each with different localisation of the lesion, preceding psychiatric illness and familial incidence of psychiatric illness. Two cases are presented that partly conform to these research findings. Some remarks are made on the desirability of psychoeducation as well as diagnostics and treatment of the elderly depressed post-stroke patient.
