summary  Several compounds, in particular antipsychotics, can cause drug-induced movement disorders such as dyskinesia, akathisia, parkinsonism and dystonia. A clinical examination is required in order to screen for these movement disorders. The rating scales are suitable for ascertaining the precise location and the severity of the movement disorders. In clinical practice the following combination of scales is applicable: the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS), the Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale (BARS) and the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). A possible alternative is the St. Hans Rating Scale (SHRS). It is advisable that patients on long-term treatment with antipsychotics be screened every six months.
