During the series of concerts he conducted for the World Exposition at Antwerp in 1885 the Flemish composer P. Benoit had a break-down which is attributed by all his biographers to excess of work and duties. However, scrutiny of his life events, his family, his letters and his works leads to the assumption that Benoit suffered from a bipolar disorder.
