This article tries to show why it is necessary to discern the syndrome of Asperger within the scala of the pervasive developmental disorders. The basis of the syndrome is a deficit in the possibility of relating to other people. This deficit is not as clearcut as in Kanner-autism and of a different type, which explains why the patient is often misappraised, which leads to a lot of suffering for the patient and his caretakers. The conclusion is, that Asperger's need a different kind of treatment than other pervasive developmental disorders; mainly supportive counseling for patient and parents (caretakers).
