The department of psychiatry of the University Hospital Utrecht in The Netherlands incorporates a special unit for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa patients. The unit offers specialised programmes on clinical, day-treatment or outpatient basis. Firstly, diagnosis, clinical features and epidemiology of bulimia nervosa are described. After a case-description the literature on group psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa is reviewed. Finally out outpatient programme and methods are described. Bulimia nervosa patients are offered a group-therapeutic programme on an outpatient basis, including diary sessions, drama therapy and group psychotherapy.
