Although the introduction of the five axes of DSM-III has meant a significant step forward towards adequate diagnostic procedures, there are many disadvantages of the current, categorical, system of Axis II. In this paper these disadvantages are discussed. An alternative approach, making use of two or three dimensions, also has its weak points, which are discussed as well.
