Within an exploratory field research the diagnostic process in the context of the assessment of insanity was studied. The concept of insanity is not defined by the Dutch Insanity Law. In practice the interpretation of the concept by psychiatrists shows large variations. Insanity is typically assessed in hectic situations. This is one of the reasons why the diagnostic process is unreliable and limited. Recommendations for improvement are discussed.
