This article contains a survey of the exact data concerning suicides in the region around the hospital at Roermond and the parasuicides treated clinically there during the period 1975-1983. It appears that 50% of the suicides dit not receive psychiatric treatment, while marked differences are ascertained between the groups of suicides that do and do not appear in the psychiatric files. In this study no direct relationship can be demonstrated between the increase in the number of parasuicides and the increase in the number of suicides. Furthermore a few differences between the data obtained in the Roermond area and the national data are dealt with in greater detail.
