In a number of cases anorexia nervosa has to be treated on an inpatient base. In this setting behaviour modification techniques are useful and often implicit. Described are:

• operant conditioning during weight restoration,
• exposure- or systematic desensitisation procedures of the phobic aspects of the anorectic behaviour,
• shaping- and fading procedures following weight restoration,
• cognitive therapy, directed against the anorectic, perfectionistic attitude, and
• social skills training.

In short, the complementary relation is described between the behavioural model in the treatment of anorexia nervosa and some other therapeutic models.
