Short report

Should psychiatry await the solution of the mind-bodyproblem?

H. Koers

This paper adresses the relevant philosophical approaches to the mind-bodyproblem. It is argued that at the current state of affairs no unproblematic solution exists. Interactionism may have its difficulties, the same holds true for idealism and the various forms of materialism. A future 'neurophilosophy' may come to encompass behavioral sciences and neuroscience, meanwhile psychiatry should not be reduced to either psychotherapy or neurobiology. The psychiatrist should remain a psychotherapist as well as a physician.
