F. Depestele: Implications of the behavioral and cognitive therapeutic viewpoints for the treatment of depression. A review of the literature.
The first part of the paper is a review — with the emphasis on the search for practical guidelines for therapy — of several behavioristic theories of depression. An attempt is made to categorize them in the operant, the respondent, the Basic Id, the learned helplessness and the selfcontrol models of behavior.
In the second part a more extended presentation is given of the theoretical viewpoints of the cognitive therapists: A. T. Beck, A. Ellis and D. Meichenbaum. Implications for the therapy of depression are delineated.
Finally the integrationmodel (of behavioral and cognitive principles) of Wilcoxon et al. is presented.
