Short report

General psychiatry training or subspecialization

W. van Tilburg

In the future, subspecialties within psychiatry - just as within other medical specialties - will also be developed, stimulated by the increase of specific possibilities of treatment. The best way to realize this is by formal subspecialty certification. There will still exist a need for psychiatrists trained in general psychiatry, who can assist in meeting the growing demand for psychiatric treatment by collaborating with general practitioners. The education of residents should consist of a general basic training of three to four years, followed by a program of one to two years, directed at a more specific professional development.
