A patient with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy

A female patient is described who was initially diagnosed as suffering from a personality disorder, but who eventually proved to be suffering from a form of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. A description is given of the clinical picture, the aetiology and the treatment possibilities of this disorder which is not easily recognized.
