Aprosodia is a neuropsychological disorder that can constitute part of the symptomatology of a range of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Patients suffering from aprosodia have difficulties recognizing or producing non-verbal aspects of language like pitch, intonation, melody, rhythm, velocity of speech, speech volume and stress. The function of prosody is to convey emotions in language, to establish rapport and it has a function in syntactic disambiguition. The authors discuss the background and clinical relevance of this disorder, presenting a case-history.
