DSM-IV or ICD-10, a bogus choice?

R. Giel

To gain self-respect as a medical doctor the psychiatrist has put much effort in master- ing the art of diagnostic classification. As a result, the diagnostic classes have acquired the status of diseases entities, leading in recent times to an emphasis, for example, on the study of comorbidity. The choice between DSM and ICD has become of paramount importance. Their feasibility in the daily practice of clinical decision making appears of little concern to the producers and users of the systems.
