ECT as compulsory treatment. A case study
summary Description of a patient diagnosed with a medicationresistent psychotic depression. Finally, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was the only treatment with a reasonable chance for recovery. Patient as well as his wife, as his representative, refused this treatment. The patient was treated with ect as a compulsory treatment with a good result. The medical considerations for and juridical aspects of compulsory treatment with ECT in the Netherlands are discussed.
