Diversity in symptomatology and course of the bipolar manic episode

A.C.M. Vergouwen, M.W.J. Koopmans, T. Kuipers

The diversity in symptomatology and the possibility of a chronic course after the acute phase of the bipolar manic episode is illustrated with two cases. Other symptoms than the alterations of mood and hyperactivity may predominate the clinical picture at a later stage when a manic episode takes a chronic course. This should not lead to changes in diagnosis, because the appropriate treatment will be discontinued too early.
