Case report

Asperger syndrome or a personality disorder in the A-cluster: differential diagnosis in an adult patient. A case study

M.B. de Koning, A.J. Fouwels

A 42-year-old man was hospitalised against his will because he had proved unable to look after himself properly, was socially isolated and displayed repetitive behaviour patterns. He was diagnosed as having late-onset schizophrenia. In addition, a comorbid pre-existing disorder was suspected, namely a personality disorder in the A-cluster or Asperger syndrome. As a result of a literature search it was concluded that the overlap between Asperger syndrome and in particular a schizoid personality disorder is so large that the difference between the disorders may perhaps be only a dimensional one.
