Movement disorders due to modern antidepressants -

R. Costa, H.L. Van

In this paper we describe the movement disorders which appeared in three patients using citalopram. On the basis of these cases we discuss the prevalence, nature, symptoms and treatment of the movement disorders that occur as side effects of modern antidepressants. Apparently, all modern antidepressants lead to movement disorders, irrespective of whether the drugs are administered in high or low dose or are used in the short or long term. There are indications that in clinical practice movement disorders linked to the use of antidepressants are more frequent than reported. In the first instance the treatment of choice is to switch to a different antidepressant.
