Stabilization and symptom reduction in the treatment of dissociative identity disorder

S. Boon, O. van der Hart

A generally accepted treatment model for posttraumatic stress, including dissociative identity disorder (DID), is Pierre Janet's stagemodel, consisting of: (1) stabilization and symptom reduction, (2) treatment of traumatic memories, and (3) reintegration and rehabilitation. The first stage constitutes the necessary basis for subsequent treatment stages. For many DID patients, treatment is limited to this stage. In this article eight types of interventions aimed at stabilization and symptom reduction are dis- cussed, and attention is given to five factors important in making the choice for these treatment goals only.
